Why ShieldsWeather?

This website is here for you to better understand the world of weather.

There are enough websites, apps and media sources out there to give you forecasts, current conditions and extreme weather images.  ShieldsWeather will not (just) be that.  Instead, the goal here is to give you the story behind the story.  To tell you what’s unsaid behind the ‘public’ message you are used to seeing.

With decades of experience in the weather business as a meteorologist, team lead of a high impact weather office I am passionate about the weather – but more so the story behind what the public sees about the weather.  I have travelled throughout North America touring weather offices and to learn what (who) can you trust and how much faith you should put in mainstream weather information.

The plan here is through a series of videos and posts to empower you to understand and make better use of the typical weather information that filters into your day-to-day life.  Some of the topics that come to mind are:

  • phone apps: cautions, usage and what to trust
  • forecast websites: are there good ones or bad ones, which ones?
  • public warnings: what they mean, how they can (or may not) save your life
  • weather forecasts: limitations, the real truth about the accuracy, how to use them
  • meteorologists: what do they do? Are internet source weather models just as good?
  • extreme weather events: More frequent? Are they really unpredictable?
  • rants: when the public deserved a better weather forecast and didn’t get it
  • high impact weather: coverage of events that could change your life
  • seasonal forecasts: it can have value; we’ll show you how

I will be posting her frequently on these and other topics that come to mind.  Hopefully, from time to time there will be other commentary, videos and posts from other weather professionals to help add value to your understanding of it all.  Watch for an announcement for our youtube channel that will provide video content as well.

This is very exciting and I hope you check back often.

Weather knows no boundaries and neither do I!
